About
Neil Terry, Director, NTMC
A life on the water
Boats have always been a huge part of my life, ever since my Dad taught me how to sail his yacht when I was a young boy growing up in the Isle of Wight. We needed a dinghy to get out to the yacht, so he taught me how to row that, too.
I was in my element when I was on the water, I loved it, so you can imagine how chuffed I was when Dad built me my very own dinghy to go sailing in.
There was only ever going to be one career for me when I left school, and that was to join the Royal Navy. I spent 33 years in the Royal Navy, where I was a Seaman Specialist. My last two postings were as the River Officer at the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, and finally, as Warrant Officer First Class in the Ministry of Defence (MoD) Small Boat Procurement Team in Bristol. More of which later …
While serving in the Royal Navy, I became a Royal Yachting Association (RYA)-certified instructor for Advanced Powerboat, Yachtmaster Instructor for Power and Sail. To this day, I continue to instruct and examine for Yachtmaster Power and Sail awards.
After leaving the Royal Navy in 2014, I launched my own company, Neil Terry Maritime Consultancy, or NTMC. I am also a Fellow in the Institute of Leadership and Management, and a Member of City and Guilds Institute.
NTMC – the sole official UK supplier of JetDock products
When I left the Royal Navy, I wanted to use my expertise and skills within the maritime industry. My latter role in the Royal Navy was to recommend, install, maintain and repair drive-on docks at bases all around the world.
The American company JetDock are the world leaders in drive-on floating dock and boat lift systems, supplying and installing them for the US coastguard and US government agencies. Their drive-on docks are also the convenient docking solution for marinas and private boat owners in the US.
I’m extremely proud to be the only official UK supplier of JetDock products, and to have been able to install and service a number of these for the MoD worldwide.
The JetDock system comes in various sizes with the capacity to lift a craft up to 15m (50ft) long, and up to 22 tonnes (50,000 lbs) in weight. The docks are made using high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic, which means they’re recyclable. And there’s no need to apply any coatings.
Why you should consider a drive-on dock:
For boat owners, a JetDock drive-on dock doesn’t just bring convenience, it’s also cost-effective and protects your investment. Here are just some of the benefits:
-
Keeps your boat in ship-shape condition because it’s kept out of the water. This means the boat’s through-life maintenance costs are lower and your boat’s value is maintained
-
Easy to use. Simply pull onto the dock, which sinks down beneath the boat. Then, once you’ve positioned the boat, flick a switch that fills the dock’s tanks with air, allowing the dock to return to the surface. Now, you can step out of the boat!
-
Safer, because there is a reduced risk of the boat sinking
-
The boat can be launched any time of the day or night, and can be done single-handedly
-
No need for a fork-lift or for regular anti-fouling and scrubbing
-
You can access 95% of the bottom of the boat, so it’s easy to clean. And you can walk all the way around the boat.
No worries!
The beauty of this system? It’s flexible and future-proof. If you need to make your JetDock bigger, it’s dead easy. It’s completely expandable – we just add extra parts. A dock has a 10-year warranty (subject to terms and conditions), but lots of them are still going strong now, 25 years after they were installed.
Who benefits
A JetDock drive-on dock works for anyone who has a boat of value. This includes:
Marinas
Private boat owners
Government agencies (ie, river police)
Military
What you should do next
Once you appoint NTMC, you can sit back and let us do the rest. Often, all we need is the boat’s dimensions and location. Occasionally, we might need a site visit. Installation can usually be done within 10-12 weeks of the order. Then we come and install it – smaller docks can be installed in a day.
Remember: you’re not just getting the world-leading product, you’re also getting it installed by a specialist who has done this for the Royal Navy at locations globally, with competence and expertise, and who is a fully qualified installer of JetDock systems.
